Play Blackjack Online – for Free or with Real Money
Blackjack is one of the most popular card games in online casinos. The aim of blackjack is to beat the dealer without exceeding a total of 21. Blackjack is also known as a “point game” and is usually played by at least two players and a dealer.
The History of Blackjack

The origins of blackjack remain disputed, but researchers generally agree that the game originated in a French casino around the year 1700. The French card game was called “Vingt-et-Un”, which translates as “Twenty-One”. The game later spread throughout Europe, and French settlers brought it to America, where casinos later became widespread. Interestingly, the rules at that time differed from modern blackjack. For example, only the dealer was allowed to double down.
There is also a theory that blackjack has Roman roots, as gambling was popular in ancient Rome. According to this theory, the game was played using wooden blocks marked with numbers rather than traditional playing cards.
In the 20th century, the game was still commonly known as 21, but it was during this period that it became known as blackjack. Casinos needed a way to promote the game, so bonus payouts were introduced. Players received additional rewards when one of the black jacks (spades or clubs) was drawn together with the ace of spades. As online blackjack grew in popularity, such bonuses became less common, but the name blackjack had already become firmly established.
Blackjack Rules
Although blackjack requires some knowledge of the rules and basic strategy, it is generally easy to learn. At the beginning of the game, the dealer deals two cards to each player, including themselves, and reveals one of their cards. Each card has a specific point value:
- Cards from 2 to 10 correspond to their face value;
- Jack, Queen and King are worth 10 points;
- Ace is worth 1 or 11 points, whichever is more advantageous for the player.
The game proceeds clockwise. During their turn, each player may draw an additional card. The value of the drawn card is added to their total score. If the total exceeds 21, the player loses and is eliminated from the round. If the total does not exceed 21, the player may draw another card or stand.
The dealer is the last to act and reveals their second card. The dealer must draw a card if they have 16 points or fewer and must stand if the total is 17 or more. Cards are returned to the deck only after the round is completed.
Moves in Blackjack
Once you understand the basic rules, playing blackjack becomes straightforward. An online blackjack player has six possible moves: stand, hit, double down, split, insurance bet and surrender.
- Stand. The player is satisfied with their hand and does not draw another card;
- Hit. The player requests another card to increase their total;
- Double down. The player doubles their bet and receives one additional card;
- Split. A pair is divided into two separate hands, increasing winning potential;
- Insurance bet. If the dealer shows an ace, the player can place an insurance bet;
- Surrender. The player chooses to end the round early after receiving the first cards.
Blackjack Playing Strategies
Basic strategy depends largely on the dealer’s face-up card. If the dealer shows a strong card, such as 7, 8, 9, 10 or an ace, the player should continue drawing cards until reaching a total of at least 17. If the dealer shows a card valued at 6 or lower, the player should stand on 12 or more, as the dealer may bust.
A soft hand is one that includes an ace. Because the ace can count as either 1 or 11, the player can take additional risks without immediately busting. In most cases, players continue to hit until reaching at least 18.
A hard hand occurs when the ace can only be counted as 1. For example, holding an ace, an 8 and a 6 forces the ace to count as 1, as counting it as 11 would exceed 21.
Doubling down allows the player to double their bet after receiving the initial cards, but they may then receive only one additional card. For example, if a player has an 8 and a 3 and the dealer shows a 2, doubling down can be a strong option.
Splitting pairs. Players should split aces and eights, but avoid splitting tens or fives. Two fives total 10, which is a strong hand for doubling down. Pairs of fours are also usually not split, as eight is already a solid total.
Types of Blackjack
Blackjack is one of the most popular games in online casinos. The rules are simple, yet the game offers strategic depth. Most software providers offer both classic blackjack and various rule variations.
Playing blackjack online is convenient, but counting cards is practically impossible. Cards are reshuffled automatically, often after every round, making traditional card-counting techniques ineffective.
Common blackjack variants include:
- Classic Blackjack;
- European Blackjack;
- American Blackjack;
- Spanish 21;
- Super Fun 2.

Frequently Asked Questions
🎯 Why play blackjack, and why is it so popular?
There are several reasons for this. First, blackjack is an engaging game that is relatively easy to learn and comes in many different variants. One of the main reasons for its popularity, however, is its high RTP (Return to Player). Compared to most other online casino games, blackjack usually offers one of the highest payout percentages, which means better winning odds for players.
🃏 Can you play blackjack online for free?
Blackjack is typically played for real money rather than for free. However, there are several video blackjack variants and some casinos offer demo versions that allow you to play at no cost. While you cannot win real money, you also take no financial risk. On our website, you can play online blackjack for free and explore different versions of the game from various providers.
💡 Are there special rules that apply to the blackjack dealer?
In general, the dealer follows the same basic rules as the player and must comply with the rules of the specific blackjack variant. However, there are a few important nuances. The dealer must draw a card when holding 16 points or less and must stand on 17 points or more. If you play in exactly the same way without applying proper strategy, the casino will have a mathematical advantage. That’s why it’s important to learn basic blackjack strategies and take calculated risks.
